"I came in because I didn't want to be lonely but still wanted to be independent. Now this is truly my home, I'm very happy here"

- Brenda (MacPherson Resident)

MacPherson House

MacPherson House provides supported living to the over 55s and at present our residents are aged between 74-100. They have their own private room with en-suite shower room and residents may furnish their room with their own personal items to make it more homely. There is also a communal lounge, dining room and two utility rooms providing washing machines, tumble dryers, fridges, microwaves and toasters. Staff provide tea, coffee and biscuits twice a day and lunch and supper are served in the dining room. Residents make their breakfast independently in their room and items for this can be collected from the house kitchen.

A Bit More About the Society

"The Abbeyfield Weymouth Society has been providing homes to elderly people for more than 60 years. I myself have been involved in the financial side for 50+ years, and over that time I have seen a lot of changes. At one point the society had four homes providing accommodation to 45 people but with changes in views, people were encouraged to stay in their homes and buy in the care and support that they need. Consequently the numbers of people seeking accommodation of the type that we offer, dropped and we found it difficult to let our supported units and closed two houses, investing the proceeds from sale of those into upgrading our remaining two houses. Then, as of May 2024 we sold our care home, Legh House, as a going concern to ensure the continuation of the home, and the staff's jobs.

As a small local society, we are one of many member societies affiliated to Abbeyfield England. Able to call on the national society's resources whilst remaining independent. Our trustees are ultimately responsible for all aspects of our company "limited by guarantee". Financially we must cover all overheads and provide for capital needs and a small surplus. I work with the trustees budgeting to try and ensure this. We are regulated by the Charity Commission and and we are registered as a Social Landlord.

Our aim is to provide a home that is safe and secure, homely and to combat loneliness often felt by the elderly, and our staff work hard to ensure that our philosophy is fulfilled. Our volunteers are a very important part of that, and we always need people who are able to volunteer their time to call in and chat, do artwork, knit and natter or carry out exercise classes and other activities with our residents."
